More than four thousand five hundred Ukrainian refugee children and youth are registered in Estonian schools
4,538 children and young people who arrived in Estonia from Ukraine are registered in the Estonian Education Information System (EHIS) as of 16 May, comparing to 4,399 a week earlier. 1,168 children are enrolled in primary education, 3,010 in basic education, 183 in upper-secondary education and 177 in vocational education.
Children and young people from Ukraine are present in all counties all over Estonia from kindergartens to vocational schools. According to EHIS, the counties with the highest number of war refugees from Ukraine registered in educational institutions are Harjumaa (2,145), Tartumaa (496), Pärnumaa (317), Ida-Virumaa (303), Lääne-Virumaa (283), and Saaremaa (170).
69,9% of Ukrainian children and young people have been registered in Estonian-language schools, 9,7% in language immersion, 19,9% in Russian-language schools and 0,5% in English-language schools.
Many educational institutions across Estonia have employed educational staff from Ukraine. Accoring to the survey carried out by the Ministry 135 Ukrainian war refugees have been employed in 91 education institutions. Most of them are employed as teachers or teaching assistants, but there are also psychologists, support workers, speech therapists, learning coordinators and those who help in the canteen or keep the schoolhouse clean.
