According to the Swiss National Science Foundation, a ban on animal testing – as is being sought by the movement known as Ja zur tierversuchsfreien Zukunft (Yes to a Future Without Animal Testing) – would "massively restrict human and veterinary medicine and basic biological and environmental research".

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has signed up to Swiss Universities’ recently established Swiss Transparency Agreement on Animal Research, which aims to further improve communication and transparency. As part of that work it is funding research into furthering the 3R principles of animal research. These are developing alternative methods, using the smallest number of animals to generate the maximum knowledge and minimising the stress that animals experience.
