Journal A published a paper (Article 1). Two years later, a reader alerted the editor of Journal A to potential misconduct by one of the authors, suggesting involvement in the fraudulent publication of a paper (Article 2) in Journal B. The reader noted that Article 2 in Journal B was nearly identical to an earlier article (Article 3) in Journal C.

Upon review, the editor of Journal A concluded that the case appeared to involve plagiarism. The committee raised concerns about whether the editor of Journal B had been informed. They advised contacting the author for an explanation and, if unsatisfactory, reaching out to the author's institution. Additionally, Journal A should verify that Article 1 is not plagiarized.

Following COPE's guidelines, the editorial team of Journal A has:

  • Sent a letter to the author expressing concerns about the similarities between the articles and requesting an explanation.
  • Notified the Editor-in-Chief of Journal B about the potential plagiarism to address the issue.

This case underscores the importance of maintaining academic integrity and following proper protocols to address allegations of misconduct.
