Passion around open access and free publications
Passions can run high around the issue of calls to transform the European Union's research repository into a collective, non-profit, large-scale public good publishing service that could compete with commercial publishers. According to an article by Jack Grove published on the Times Higher Education website, the proposal to expand the use of the EU's open access platform Open Research Europe, launched in 2021, has received a mixed reaction from the League of European Research Universities.
It seems that "open access" should be free for everyone, but a scientific publication is also a product that cannot come from nowhere. As the president of Eindhoven University of Technology rightly pointed out, "open access publication does not mean free open access publication. There will always be a bill that someone has to pay for the work done... So no more pilots of new publishing models and peer learning exercises, no more Plans S, no more game-changing activities."
Therefore, when implementing initiatives, it is important not to go too far, because even "diamond" journals are sponsored: open access publications are only possible thanks to subsidies from universities, governments or other sponsors.
