Passion around open access and free publications
Passions can run high around the issue of calls to transform the European Union's research repository into a collective, non-profit, large-scale public good publishing service that could compete with commercial publishers. According to an article by Jack Grove published on the Times Higher Education website, the proposal to expand the use of the EU's open access platform Open Research Europe, launched in 2021, has received a mixed reaction from the League of European Research Universities.

Is the scientific system in crisis?
Over the course of seventy years, academic journal articles have become commodities, and their meta-data a further source of revenue. This is the story begins at the end of a second World War, when the US Government agrees a massive increase in funding for research, after Vannevar Bush champions basic research as the ‘pacemaker of technological progress’.
OpenAI shuttered, a tool that was supposed to tell human writing from AI due to a low accuracy rate. In an (updated) blog, OpenAI said it decided to end its AI classifier as of July 20th. “We are working to incorporate feedback and are currently researching more effective provenance techniques for text,” the company said.

Following the rapidly evolving use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as large language models (LLMs) and generative chatbots, JAMA and the JAMA Network journals released guidance on the responsible use of these tools by authors and researchers in scholarly publishing. These policies preclude the inclusion of nonhuman AI tools as authors and require the transparent reporting of use of such tools in preparing manuscripts and other content and when used in research submitted for publication. In addition, submission and publication of clinical images created by AI tools is discouraged, unless part of formal research design or methods. In all such cases, authors must take responsibility for the integrity of the content generated by these models and tools.
The president of Aizu University in Japan has resigned after two investigations found he had self-plagiarized or double-submitted a dozen papers.
Toshiaki Miyazaki was also found to have “filed an application for a project subsidized by the national government without going through the university official procedures,” which “caused confusion,” according to Aizu. He resigned effective July 31, 2023.
